FAQ

Question: When I close the lid of my laptop, the laptop shuts down. Is there any way to prevent this?

Answer:

Windows has a special setting that controls what happens to the laptop when the lid is closed. And this setting needs to be changed. Right-click on the Start button and select Power Options. From the options on the right side, select More Power Settings. A new window will open and from the menu on the left side, select Lid Close Settings and select Do no action.

– On macOS, there are 4 conditions that must be met to prevent the MacBook from shutting down. The MacBook needs to be connected to power, the external keyboard, mouse and monitor need to be connected. And then the MacBook lid can be closed and only the external monitor can be used.

Question: I can’t set the monitor to 4K 60Hz resolution.

A: Please first make sure that both the dock/graphics adapter and the monitor can handle this resolution. Please also make sure that:

– If connected via HDMI, your HDMI cable supports 4K 60Hz. Only HDMI cables version 2.0 and later support this. Also, some monitors/TVs may have an item in the settings that needs to be enabled.

– If connected via DisplayPort, your cable supports 4K60Hz. Only DP cables version 1.2 and later support this. Also, make sure you have the DP 1.2 setting selected in your monitor’s settings. Check your monitor’s manual in case you don’t know where to look for this setting.

Question: Can a monitor connected via a docking station use nVidia/AMD/Intel graphics technologies? For example, G-sync or FreeSync.

A: The docking station cannot use nVidia/AMD/Intel graphics technologies.

Question: With the dock/graphics adapter, is it possible to set the frame rate to 120 Hz (144 Hz, etc.)?

A: This is possible. The docking station has this option, the condition is to use the DisplayPort on the docking station.

Question: Is it possible to connect a monitor with a touch screen?

A: This is possible, but i-tec Technologies cannot provide technical support in this case as this is a monitor manufacturers technology.

Question: The image on the connected monitor is flickering.

A: 1. Please try a different higher quality HDMI/DisplayPort cable, this can often solve your problem. Also, please reboot your laptop/computer as well as the docking station.

2. Please update your graphics card drivers directly from the graphics card manufacturer’s website or from the laptop manufacturer’s website.

Question: Can I use an adapter to convert the signal from DVI/HDMI to DisplayPort?

A: You can convert the signal from HDMI to DisplayPort, but only if you use an active (powered) adapter.

Therefore, you cannot use a passive (non-powered) cable/adapter under any circumstances. Passive cables/adapters can only convert DisplayPort signals to HDMI.

Question: The USB/Thunderbolt cable is too short for my needs. Can I use a longer cable from another manufacturer?

A: Yes, it is possible to use other longer cables. However, we are not responsible for any problems caused by using third party cables.

QUESTION: What is the function of the power button if I cannot turn the laptop on/off with it?

A: The power button is used to turn the docking station ON or OFF, as well as to restore it to factory settings.

Question: I have speakers/headphones connected in the audio jack of the dock, but they do not play any sound.

A: Right-click the Start button and select Settings. From here, select System and from the menu on the left side, select Sound and change Output Devices here.

Question: I use a docking station in my office/company and when I plug the Ethernet cable into the docking station, it is not possible to connect to the internet/local area networks. But when I plug this cable into the LAN connector on my laptop, everything works properly.

A: In some cases, companies restrict Internet/local network connections to network elements with a known MAC address (each LAN connector has its own MAC address).

You can work around this by either manually changing the MAC address of the LAN connector in the docking station, or you can use our i-tec Docker Pro software (for Windows) to clone the MAC address from your laptop to the docking station. i-tec Docker Pro is free and can be downloaded from our website.

Question: I have a laptop with a Thunderbolt 3 or USB-C port, yet the laptop won’t charge.

A: According to the Thunderbolt 3/USB-C specifications, powering the laptop is only optional. Not all laptops allow this option, especially laptops with power supplies over 100W. Also, some manufacturers restrict/block charging from docks/adapters not made by that manufacturer. If you are unsure whether your USB-C port meets these requirements, please contact either the device manufacturer or our technical support: support@itecproduct.com.

Question: My external monitor does not wake up when I wake my laptop from sleep.

A: Try changing the monitor input setting from AUTO to a fixed monitor input.

If after a long time the automatic search for an active port does not find any input, the monitor may fall asleep so that it no longer responds to the signal from the dock port.

In case of any problems after waking up, the sleep or hibernation mode on some devices needs to be turned off.

Question: Does this dock/graphics adapter support audio signal transmission via HDMI or DP?

A: Yes, if your monitor (projector) includes integrated speakers, audio signal transmission via HDMI or DP cable is possible. However, you need to change the default audio playback device in your OS settings.

Question: I have connected a standard analog microphone to the dock’s combined audio port, but the microphone does not work. Why?

A: The combo (TRRS) audio port is not compatible with standard analog microphones.

Question: Can I have my product running permanently (24 hours a day, 7 days a week)?

A: Theoretically yes, but continuous operation is not good for product durability and reliability. As with any other device that contains active on-chip components equipped with software or firmware tools, the docking station needs to be rebooted once in a while, especially in areas where connected devices are alternating (typically hot-desking and hot-plugging) to avoid potential problems and keep operation smooth. The ideal or recommended usage scenario would be to reboot or shut down the product at least three times a week. Docking stations that are not equipped with an ON/OFF button can be turned off by disconnecting the power supply unit.

Question: On my MacBook 13″/15″ 2016 and later, my WiFi or Bluetooth stops working or USB 3.0 devices connected to the dock disconnect. Where is the problem?

A: This problem is caused by interference in the 2.4GHz band. A possible solution is to connect the dock to the Thunderbolt 3 (USB-C) port on the Mac on the left side closest to you or use the ports on the right side. These ports are located farthest from the WiFi antenna. Another solution is to use the 5GHz band and place the dock as far away from your Mac’s monitor as possible. For more information, see here: https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT201163

Question: I have your device and the video transfer is not working.

A: Your device must meet the system requirements, especially any DP Alt. mode support on the USB-C port. In case you are unsure about DP Alt. Please contact either the device manufacturer or our technical support:support@itecproduct.com.

Question: Why does only mirroring or only one video output work on my MacBook?

A: Unfortunately, macOS does not support MST technology and is only capable of mirroring both outputs, or only one output can work.

Question: The image through the docking station flickers.

A: If you are experiencing this phenomenon, it is possible that you may just have the monitor refresh rate set incorrectly. For example, if your refresh rate is set to 59 Hz, please set it to 60 Hz and vice versa.

Question: Is it possible to charge HP laptops equipped with Thunderbolt 3 technology with this docking station?

A: Hewlett-Packard has implemented a proprietary technology in some of its notebook models that allows charging only when using genuine HP docks. Please check your laptop’s compatibility with your dealer or contact HP Technical Support.

Question: Do I need to install drivers before using the docking station?

A: No, installation is only required on Windows 7, Android and macOS.

However, we always recommend installing the latest version of drivers from the site here: Driver

Question: The LAN connection is not working on my Android.

A: Ethernet support must be supported directly by the tablet manufacturer. You can easily check for support in the settings – “Network Connections” – “Other Networks” – and the “Ethernet” entry must be there.

Question: Everything works for me, but it only shows a speed of 10 Mbps, where is the problem?

A: Check all cabling between the PC/NB and the active element and tighten the RJ-45 connectors. It also helps to replace the Ethernet cable between the adapter and the active network element (hub, switch, router) with a certified one. Setting a specific value (instead of Auto Negotiation) in the properties of the network adapters, the Speed & Duplex item may also be a solution.

Question: Where can I download DisplayLink drivers for ChromeOS?

A: There is no need to download or install drivers for ChromeOS. They have been included with ChromeOS since R51. Just plug in the dock.

Question: I’m using ChromeOS and the image on my external monitor is not smooth/blurry.

A: In this case, the problem is with an underpowered CPU. In most cases, ChromeOS laptops use less powerful processors and the DisplayLink software uses the CPU exclusively for calculations.

Question: I have a ChromeOS laptop with two external 4K monitors, is there any way to set fullHD resolution on both monitors?

A: Unfortunately, at the moment you can only set the resolution for one monitor on ChromeOS. The second monitor is set to the maximum possible (native) resolution.

Question: The dock should be able to handle up to 5K/60Hz, but I can only set 4K/30Hz on the monitor. What is the problem?

A: In order to set 5K/60Hz resolution, the main graphics card (in most laptops this is Intel) must support DisplayLink 1.4 with DSC. Please make sure your laptop supports this.

Question: Can I use this dock on Linux?

A: Yes, this dock can be used on Linux. DisplayPorts and HDMI are built on USB-C DisplayPort Alt Mode – your distribution/device must support this technology for this output to work on Linux.

The necessary drivers should already be integrated in all current distributions.

Question: The docking station is not detected by the i-tec DockMate Software at all.

A: Ensure that the LAN connection between the docking station and the connected laptop is properly established.

Question: The docking station is detected by the i-tec DockMate Software but cannot be added to management.

A: This usually indicates that the docking station is already managed by a different DockMate instance. To resolve this, perform a factory reset by holding the ON/OFF button until the LED starts blinking rapidly, then press the ON/OFF button again once the blinking begins.

Question: The docking station is not charging my USB devices when it is not connected to the laptop.

A: By design, the docking station must be connected to a laptop in order to charge USB devices.

Question: How can I update the docking station’s firmware?

A: To update the docking station’s firmware, you need to use the i-tec DockMate software.

Question: I want to manage intelligent docking stations. How can I do that?

A: To manage intelligent docking stations, you can use our backend server solution or our intuitive Windows management software.

Question: What does each LED on the docking station represent?

Answer:

  • Left LED: Indicates whether the docking station is turned ON or OFF.
    • Green: Docking station is turned ON.
    • No light: Docking station is turned OFF.
  • Right-most LED: Indicates the LAN connection status and the connection to the management solution.
