Description

Expand your desktop with one or two external HDMI monitors, via the new Thunderbolt 3 connector. The adapter supports 2x 4K resolution 4096×2160@60Hz and stereo sound.

The adapter is intended primarily for devices that are equipped with a Thunderbolt 3 interface (MacBook Pro 2016, DELL XPS12, DELL XPS 13, DELL XPS 15, HP Elite X2, EliteBook Folio G1, Spectre x360, Lenovo Thinkpad P50, Lenovo Thinkpad P70 etc.). The connector has many advantages, it is smaller, symmetrical and allows easy connection, because you can rotate the connector either way.

The adapter is an excellent choice for designers, graphic designers, gamers, and other users working with more than one screen simultaneously. Its performance allows you to run the most demanding applications on one or two independent displays. It is ideal for editing 4K 60Hz video or for other Ultra HD tasks such as CAD drawings or viewing medical images.
Using the “Extend” and “Mirror” modes, you can for example use applications on two monitors (e.g., wide spreadsheets), or you can work on the first screen and search the Internet on the second screen, you can compare several documents simultaneously without constant switching between the open windows, also you can display panoramic images on two screens.
Operation is very simple, just plug the adapter into the Thunderbolt 3 port on your computer, connect it with a display device via HDMI cable and you can start using immediately. Driver installation is automatic.

FAQ

Question: I have 2 external monitors with built-in speakers. When these monitors are connected to a docking station, both of them play the same sound. Can I set up which monitor will play the sound?

Answer: Unfortunately, it is not possible to select a monitor to play the sound. At this time, the only option is to turn it off directly in the monitor settings.

Question: When I close the laptop lid, the laptop turns off. Is it possible to prevent it?

Answer:

  • Windows has a special setting which controls what the laptop should do in case of closing the lid. This setting needs to be changed. Right-click the Start button and select Power options. From the options on the right, select Other power settings. A new window opens, and here from the left menu, select Choose what closing the lid does / When I Close the Lid and select Do nothing.
  • In macOS there are 4 conditions to be met to avoid turning off the MacBook. The MacBook needs to be connected to the power supply, an external keyboard, mouse, and monitor must be connected. Then you can close the MacBook lid and work with an external monitor only.

Question: I cannot set a 4K 60Hz resolution on the monitor.

Answer: First, please make sure that both the docking station / video adapter and the monitor can handle this resolution. Also, make sure that:

  • In case of connecting via HDMI your HDMI cable supports 4K 60Hz. This is supported only by the HDMI cables version 2.0 and later. Some monitors / televisions may also have an option in the settings which needs to be turned on.
  • In case of connecting via DisplayPort your cable supports 4K 60Hz. This is supported only by the DP cables version 1.2 and later. Also, be sure that in the settings of your monitor is selected the setting DP 1.2. In case you don’t know where to find it please refer to the manual for your monitor.

Question: Can the monitor connected via the docking station use the graphics technology from nVidia/AMD/Intel? E.g. G-sync, or FreeSync.

Answer: The docking station cannot use the graphics technologies from nVidia/AMD/Intel.

Question: Is it possible to set the frame rate to 120 Hz (144 Hz etc.) with the docking station / video adapter?

Answer: This is not possible. The docking station can handle maximum 60 Hz.

Question: Is it possible to connect a touchscreen monitor?

Answer: This is possible, but in this case i-tec Technologies cannot provide technical support because it is the technology of the monitor manufacturer.

Question: The image on the connected monitor flickers.

Answer: Please try a better HDMI/DisplayPort cable, this can solve your problem.

Question: Can I use a reduction to convert the signal from DVI/HDMI to DisplayPort?

Answer: Signal conversion from HDMI to DisplayPort is possible, but only in case of using the active (powered) adapter.  In any case, a passive (non-powered) cable/adapter cannot be used. The passive cables/adapters can only convert the DisplayPort signal to HDMI.

Question: The docking station/graphics adapter will not connect at all and nothing works.
Answer: Please verify that your docking station is connected to the Thunderbolt3 port.

You can easily recognize this port by the lightning symbol .

Question The external monitor will not wake up after waking up my laptop.
Answer Try changing the monitor’s input setting from AUTO to a fixed monitor input.
If, after a long time, the automatic search for the active port does not find any input,
then the monitor may sleep so that it fails to respond to the signal from the docking station port.

Question: Does this docking station/video adapter support an audio signal transfer over HDMI or DP?
Answer: Yes, if your monitor (projector) has integrated speakers, it is possible to transfer the audio signals via HDMI or DP cable. In your OS settings, however, you must change your default audio playback device.

Question: In my TB3 docking station is working only one video output. Where can be a problem?
Answer: Some manufacturers use a limited power Thunderbolt3 port on selected models of their Laptops / tablets (like Huawei Matebook X Pro, ACER Aspire R13 or Asus ROG GL502VM).  Specifically, it concerns a reduced total rate of 20 Gbps and a maximum of 1 video output support (whereas Thunderbolt3 industry standard is a rate of 40 Gbps and a support of 2 external monitors).

Therefore, an output to a single monitor is not a docking station failure, it is an insufficient (limited) TB3 port performance in your laptop or tablet (the problem is in the TB3 port hardware and can’t be remedied).

Before purchasing any Thunderbolt3 accessories, we recommend to check the TB3 port parameters of your laptop or tablet.

Question: When I connect a docking station to my Mac, the message “Cannot use Thunderbolt accessory: connect the device to the Thunderbolt port on this Mac” will appear.
What could be the cause?
Answer: This message may be caused by using a wrong cable.

Please check whether you use a Thunderbolt3 cable (marked at both ends by a flash symbol) and not a common USB-C cable which looks almost the same. Please use only the supplied Thunderbolt3 cables.

For example, this message may also appear when using a TB3 device with a USB-C hub or docking station with only a USB-C (and not Thunderbolt3) output.

Question: Only video outputs are working when my docking station is connected to my laptop.
Nothing else works. Why?
Answer: In the case of Thunderbolt docking stations and Windows system, it is first necessary to enable the docking station in the Thunderbolt device manager. You will find this manager next to the clock as a small flash icon.

Question: The image on the screen connected via the docking station flashes.
Answer: If you experience this issue, you may only have an improper setting of the monitor refresh rate. If you have setting of 59 Hz, please set to 60 Hz.

Question: May I use this device in Linux?
Response: Yes, the docking station supports Linux. Please make sure that your distribution is up to date. The docking station uses drivers, which are a part of the OS – the drivers should already be integrated in all current distributions. Unfortunately, because of the large volume of distributions it is not possible to test all of them.
